More than just a ride: Rodrigo Mata’s winning spirit in show jumping
Mexican National champion and Meraviglia Riding Ambassador, Rodrigo reveals the discipline and adrenaline behind his equestrian passion.
On your Instagram profile, you are very active and show your passion for horses and equestrian sports. When did you start competing?
I started practicing this sport that I love so much when I was 3 years old, but I began competing around the age of 7, and since then, I haven’t stopped practicing and competing in this sport.
Why did you choose show jumping over another discipline? What makes it special?
When I started, I only rode recreationally, but over time, I fell in love with show jumping. I chose this discipline because I believe it requires a unique connection with the horse and total control over what both you and the horse are doing. What made me choose it over other disciplines is the adrenaline I feel during competitions and the healthy competitiveness in this industry.
Can you tell us about your most recent success in a competition and how you felt?
My most recent success was the 2023 National Championship in Mexico, where I placed first. It was an experience I won’t forget because, a few months before the championship, my mare got injured, and I had already registered. So, I had to ask a friend to lend me his mare. I was hopeful because I felt very confident with her, but the result was incredible. The last rounds were among the best experiences I’ve ever had because I managed to handle the pressure well, which has been a challenge for me throughout my sports career.
You are one of the longest-standing ambassadors: what did you like about Meraviglia Riding that convinced you so quickly?
The first boots I bought absolutely won me over, especially for their quality and comfort. But what surprised me most was their durability: my previous boots tended to break quite quickly, but Meraviglia boots have impressed me, and I plan to continue being an ambassador for this great brand for many more years. The made-to-measure service is incredible and efficient.
Would you recommend Meraviglia Riding to another athlete like yourself?
I would definitely recommend this brand to another rider: they’re very comfortable, durable, and beautifully designed. Plus, you can have them custom-made at a reasonable price. In my experience, it’s hard to find all these features in a single pair of boots. The quality-to-price ratio is excellent.
What is your next competition? Where can we follow you?
My next competition hasn’t been scheduled yet, but it will definitely be in the Netherlands, as I recently moved to Velp in the Netherlands to study and joined Karim el Zoghby’s stables. We’re currently planning the 2025 schedule while developing my mare, Guyane de Talma, for her first Grand Prix.
